Tom Mathews

Tom is quite simply one of the best cartoonists in the entire universe. Or any universe, for that matter. He's also a superb fine artist, and has created a series of incredibly detailed drawings based on Lewis Carroll's Alice books.

His work is in constant demand; indeed, Tom was chosen to draw a cartoon celebrating Dublin's recent tenure as the European City of Culture. I can't reprint it here, so I'll describe it:

Two tourists have entered a Dublin pub, where the dour barperson is polishing glasses.

"Hey, Barkeep!" calls one of the tourists. "How about some of that famous Dublin wit?"

"Certainly, sir," replies the barman. "Dry or sparkling?"

Tom's collections, The Toast of Europe and A Bit Off the Wall are essential reading for anyone with a taste in wicked puns and surreal word-play.
