Since Katherine's first novel, Deryni Rising, was published in 1970.
she has gone on to establish one of the best known and most popular
series in the fantasy genre: the Deryni cycle, which has
sold in excess of two million copies. The Deryni cycle is a richly
described historical fantasy series set in a medieval world of magic and
intrigue. The books have, in addition to compelling storylines and
well-realised characters, a convincing wealth of detail about medieval life.
However, she prefers to think of what she writes
as "historical fantasy", an apt term, since Katherine holds a Master of Arts
degree in English history. She is a trained hypnotist, a student of
comparative religion, a member of several orders of chivalry, and also
attended medical school for a year before deciding she would rather write
about medicine than practice it.
She is resident in Wicklow, Ireland, with her husband and fellow guest
Scott MacMillan. They share a gothic revival
home with several cats and the odd ghost.
Katherine won the 1992 Balrog Award for her novel Camber the Heretic.
